After 12 years in management at some of the biggest retailers in the world, I decided that my skillset needed a career that matched. I went back to school to get my degree in Paralegal Studies and have now been a paralegal for the last 15 years, mostly in civil litigation. The majority of that time has been in the work that actually moves a docket: drafting and responding to discovery, motions practice, briefing, trial support, and getting papers on file without a bounce from the clerk. I studied legal writing from one of the best in the business and was fortunate to have a former Court of Appeals Judge and a former President of the State Bar of Texas Paralegal Division as my mentors.

My core dockets are plaintiff's personal injury, plaintiff's employment, and business litigation — including trade secrets and non-compete / non-solicitation disputes. I have also drafted commercial contracts across industries (SaaS, healthcare, service agreements, purchase agreements) and spent three years preparing contracts and NDAs for a Class I railroad, plus a year of the same work for a construction company. When a lawyer assigns it, I can prepare simple wills and durable powers of attorney. I specialize in legal research, writing, and investigation.

Federal court is not an add-on. I work the federal docket and the Fifth Circuit regularly: notices of appeal, ordering and coordinating transcripts, pulling and organizing the record, indexing it, and assembling, finalizing, and filing the brief. On occasion I have handled writing federal motions and briefs entirely, including the research. I e-file in Texas state courts and in federal district courts nationwide. Fifth Circuit filings I have handled were accepted first time — no rejections, no returns. I know PACER well enough to run the account side of it, not just pull a docket.

I have sat at counsel table for trial support in civil cases and assisted in others in recent years. I can run the courtroom technology so the lawyer is not troubleshooting a laptop while the jury is in the box — while simultaneously remembering and tracking whether or not the attorney submitted Exhibit 14 to the record and whether the judge made a ruling on their objection (making the record is important!).

I managed a law office for seven years. I know what a file looks like when the only person who understood it just left. I have OCD level organization skills (no, really) and know how to take that giant stack of paper in the back of the room and turn it into a file anyone can pick up and read. I also train other paralegals, both in my office and in guest lectures at my local college. Training the right people is a solid investment for everyone involved, and I truly love teaching.

You stay counsel of record. I work the assignment you give me, on your templates and your calendar. I am organized to a fault — the kind of detail that keeps a record on appeal from arriving in the wrong order. I deal with your clients the way you would want them dealt with: clearly, calmly, and without overstepping. We set up how you want to be billed and agree to the billed rates. You share a copy of your file as needed (which is returned at the end of the engagement) and take a step back to work on other tasks while I handle it. Easy.

I carry professional liability coverage — E&O and Cyber — and can send a certificate when your vendor packet requires one.

Solos who cannot hire a second body this quarter. Boutiques that just landed a federal or appellate piece they do not staff every day. Mid-size teams that are in trial in one courtroom and due in another.
